Atypical Season 2 Episode 2

Atypical follows a teenage boy named Sam who is autistic. As this a blog about autism I thought I would share my opinions on it๐Ÿ˜€, as there are lots of vocal people who don’t like this because it doesn’t display autism correctly. I will say I am bad at emotions, so I do guess, until they state what they are feeling. The way I do my reviews is slightly different to most. I will describe each scene and may interject my thoughts or opinions there and then. That is because I would like most people to read this, even if they can’t watch the program. I then sum up and give my overall opinions about the episode/s. On the final episode I will sum up the whole season as well.

Atypical Season 2 Episode 2

It starts with Christopher moaning about someone being in his train room. Luisa then say to him that it is a guest room. We find out the guest is Elsa, she appears to be staying at Luisa’s along with the cat that she has to look after for Kathy. Elsa and Luisa talk about the cat and then Luisa says that she has clean out a draw for Elsa. Elsa says that she will be back before you know it.
Elsa then says confidently that 22 years of marriage doesn’t end like that. Well I guess if you haven’t been kicked out of your house and haven’t cheated on someone I could see why, but at the moment nope. Luisa still says that she is welcome to stay as long as she needs to. Then Christopher buts with “no she is not”.

It goes to Sam on his computer, looking at some liv feed penguin webcams. He is talking about how the females leaves the egg for the male to look after. We find out that he is talking to Doug, as it has always been a therapist until now. It shows how much things are changing for Sam. Casey then comes down in her Clayton Prep uniform, we find out it is her first day of going to Clayton. So the fight her and Sam got into was the day before and they are being so happy. As I say this Casey asks if Sam will be okay in school without her. Sam says yes snapping and calls her annoying- so im guessing the penguin cam is keeping him calm. Elsa walks into the kitchen, where they all are, and almost immediately the atmosphere has changed. Casey get her school stuff together and get ready to leave, Sam puts on his sound cancelling headphones and Doug tries to get her out the house. Elsa tries to find things to do like fill up the fridge, cook dinner for everyone, make the beds or do the dishes. Doug says it has all been done. Casey adds in “you don’t live her anymore, lady”- which is a little harsh but is really apt for Elsa. Doug gets everyone out the door, Sam takes off his headphones and Elsa tries to talk to him, Sam doesn’t say hello or goodbye he talks about at neutral topic- the cat. Then Sam leaves, as everyone walks out the door Casey says “why do villains always have cats?”. Which was funny. It also meant Elsa was in the house alone.

*Titles*

It follows Casey as she has just got to Clayton Prep. She just stands there to take the view in. Someone then taps her on the shoulder, we find out her name is Izzie. Casey tries to introduce her self but it appears that Izzie doesn’t want her on the team for some reason. Izzie talks about hoe she has build the team up, so I’m guessing she is the captain of the team, if their is one, Casey still acts nicely, she asks if she is going to give her a tour of the school as the coach said she would. Izzie points to the School and say classes are in there.

It goes to Sam as he is walking through doors of his school, Newton. He meets up with Paige, she says she wants to keep things causal between them. Sam asks what does that mean. Paige explains it as having fun but keeping an eye on what important, like life and the future. She continue to talk but we hear Sam speak. He talks about when Paige speaks he loses track of what her words mean, it like im talking to a whale or a dolphin. That one is common for autistics, its nice to show them putting this in a ‘Sam’ way then a general way. Anyway back to this. Paige pulls Sam into the Art room and kisses him. Then Sam gets confused and tries to hold her hand through the corridor, Paige has to explain then they can’t because they aren’t together anymore. He still looks confused as it goes to Casey trying to find her class.

It then shows Casey in her class. She looks completely confused by the lesson. She asks one of her classmates if she was in the right class, she found out that she is in the right class, just everyone is smarter than her in her class.

Sam talks to Zahid about how a relationship ca be casual. Zahid is actually helpful this time. He explains when Sam was in a relationship with Paige, then when Sam wasn’t in a relationship with Paige and then he explains the grey area (a causal relationship) to Sam. He then gives Sam some advise which was do nothing... and I thought Zahid was actually going to be helpful this time around. He explains why the grey area is so go whilst comparing it to having a dragon for a pet. For Sam could of gone for something more bird like say a penguin.
Casey joins up with her new track team. She finds they are all friendly, even Izzie surprisingly. Although she finds out most have rich parents, so decides to finish stretching and go and start running.
Doug comes back home and brings with him some food and a pizza for dinner. He opens the fridge to find Elsa has made a Lasagne for them all. He asks Sam if Elsa has been back home. Sam doesn’t know. Doug then asks Sam how the penguin dad is doing as Sam is still watching him. Sam says hungry as he hasn’t eaten in a week. So either he knows that roughly or he has been watching this penguin for at least a week. Doug then texts Elsa and ask if they can talk. It goes to Elsa as she responses yes. We see Luisa is looking over Elsa’s shoulder and she helps Elsa with what she should wear and do. Elsa to cut her hair into bangs, which is going to be interesting, as she had something similar when Sam was first diagnosed if you noticed in the first episode.

Casey is on her bed with Evan... and Sharice talking about how she doesn’t like Clayton Prep. Evan says to stick with it because it has only been a day. Whilst Sharice says to come back to Newton and forget her dreams. Casey is tempted more by Sharice then Evan. It was a fun thing to do almost like a devil and angel situation. Casey carries on complaining about Clayton Prep. Until Elsa phones her, which is funny is in some ways, the first being her ringtone is from Jaws and Secondly Casey has changed Elsa caller-ID to ‘She-Beast’, which I found funny. You can tell Casey really doesn’t want Elsa around. Casey complains about how Elsa has been ringing her all day. Evan tries to say that it is a good thing but he judges that it maybe better to side with Casey. Sam then walks into the room and says that Doug has brought pizza. Sharice asks if Casey should come back to Newton but Sam says no and that he didn’t miss her at all.

It goes back to Sam at Newton. Sam goes up to Paige and asks if she can clarify the rules a casual relationship. Paige clarifies the rules for him, so he asks if he wants to watch the penguin cam with him, Paige says it is against the rules. But she tries to get a sneak peep and finds it cute and ask him to send the link over to her.

Casey goes back to Clayton, she gets a supportive texts from Evan and then finds out that it was a non-uniform day. IT then cuts to lunch where she finds out the cafeteria do thing with there own form of money, something called convenience points and they are one something called a flex card. She asks if she can pay them with money and they say no, but there is a vending machine around the corner. Then she tries to open her locker and find out she is trying to pen up the wrong locker. She finds the last one out by the locker real owner, they actually get along quite well and they didn’t have a go at Casey. He was completely understanding of Casey situation. We then find out the he is called Nate and then Izzie comes up to him and we find out that Nate is Izzie’s boyfriend. Izzie gives Casey a nickname; Newton. Not the most creative of names but it seems like Izzie might warm up to Casey- hopefully.
Doug then meets up with Elsa. Elsa tries to be nice and happy towards Doug thinking that they maybe talking about Elsa coming back home. Then Doug drops it on her that she can’t keep coming in to the house when she likes it. SO he set some rules for her. He says that Elsa has to phone before she comes over to the house, only text in an emergency assume I have all the chores done unless he says otherwise. Elsa says you done have to do it by yourself. Doug replies penguin dad do. The penny then drops for Elsa as she realises that she isn’t coming home at all. Doug then leaves, leaving Elsa to process what has just happened. Elsa is then back to Luisa’s spare room, with Luisa trying to support Elsa. Kathy then phones saying that she is back and wants to pick up the kitten. Elsa says no because she needs the cat more then she does, Kathy thinks she has lost it.

Casey is at Clayton, she then goes tot the cafeteria with her new flex card. The person say that she will have to wait 48 hours because there is a holding period on her card. Casey goes to sit down to have granola bar, then Nate comes over to her with a pizza. He also says why Izzie is so mean to Casey is because Casey is faster then her.

Sam and Zahid are in Techtropolis talking about the casual relationship. Zahid tries to help Sam flirt with a girl in the store because Sam can still see other girls  and he mucks it up slight and puts the girls off. At the same time Paige texts him and asks him to come over. Zahid asks if he needs to borrow any condoms because he carries 12- which to me seems excessive. Anyway Sam goes over to Paige’s house and she breaks almost all of the rules and tries to explains why- she got wait-listed for a University. She then asks how Sam feels about her, he then says ‘I don’t know, but Julia says that is good sometimes’. Paige wonders when he saw Julia. Sam says last week because he told her all the things happing with his parents. Paige then is lost because  she has been kept out the loop. Then wonders why Sam didn’t tell her about all this? Sam says I didn’t have to tell you, I told Julia, which is just brilliant to see some autistic logic. Paige says if Sam wants to talk about anything with her about his parents situation then they can talk. She then explains that when she found out her news she wanted to tell Sam first and the person Sam wants to speak to first is still Julia. So she ends the casual relationship- aww poor Sam. She admits that she can’t keep a casual relationship. It then goes to Sam eating cookies with Doug. Doug say that he hasn’t left a break up with cookies before. Sam says that Paige wanted the cookies and him out of sight. Which is funny in one way because to him it meant take them in others it would of been to hid them. I would of just said close your eyes then.
Kathy finds Elsa and just looks at her to give the cat back. Elsa then hands the cat back. Then empties her suit case and fills up the draw which Luisa emptied for her.

It then goes back to Sam, Doug and Casey sitting outside. Casey is being empathetic, I think I really am guessing here. Casey suggest if they all want to watch the penguin cam, I’m guessing to take his mind of things, Sam gets really excited and runs to get his laptop.  Doug starts teasing her for being understanding towards Sam. Then you can her Sam shout that the penguin has moved. As Casey goes indoors she gets a text from Nate, asking if she wanted to have lunch with him tomorrow. Casey texts back a thumbs up emoji.

Overall: This episode was a interesting. Elsa figures out that she isn’t going back home anytime soon. Casey appears to have a friend and someone who doesn’t like her at Clayton Prep. Doug seems to have the household under control. Sam has a relationship end, learnt about a new form of relationship and can cope without Julia, Elsa or Casey. Which is big, if you go back to the start of season one, Sam needed Julia, Elsa and Casey to function. We didn’t see Julia in this episode, which I think is the first time. I also feel more for Sam as Zahid is just go more odd, I think I have to state that he has 12 condoms on him and three on them are in his shoes. Just why? Zahid has had good points in this episode but also really odd ones. I hope his screen time gets better, well... I think it can only get better. Paige seems to be an weird character as she studied autism and then forgets about Sams traits. I understand why Sam would find her annoying. I think Nate and Izzie are going to be interesting characters as they both could have some development. Also is it just more or is it weird that Nate texts Casey about lunch rather then meet her at the start of school. Izzie is the team captain so I’m guessing she is going to be more of her and maybe we get to see her be a leader to the whole team rather then be mean to Casey, unless that is how she leads?
