Atypical Season 2 Episode 1

This is second season of the Netflix series Atypical. Instead of the eight episodes we had in season one they now have ten- yay! More work 😉. I will provide links below for people who haven’t read the other reviews of season one.  It follows a teenage boy named Sam who is autistic. As this a blog about autism I thought I would share my opinions on it, as there are lots of vocal people who don’t like this because it doesn’t display autism correctly. I will say I am bad at emotions, so I do guess, until they state what they are feeling.

The way I do my reviews is slightly different to most. I will describe each scene and may interject my thoughts or opinions there and then. I may also change things, that is because I would like most people to read this, even if they can’t watch the program. I then sum up and give my overall opinions about the episode/s. On the final episode I will sum up the whole season as well.

To remind people where season one ended. Julia found out she was pregnant, and Miles proposed to her. Casey got in to Clayton Prep and found out her mum was cheating on her dad. Doug finally found out that his wife, Elsa, had been cheating on him- thanks to Casey. Elsa cheated on Doug, blabbed to all of the mothers of Casey’s team that she was going to a different team and then had to pick up the pieces around Sam. Sam has learnt about love-ish. He had a girlfriend, he broke up with his girlfriend, Paige, and lost his therapist, Julia, in a 24 hours period. Sam has also try to understand that his system at school would disappear because Casey held everything together.

Episode 1 Season 2

It starts with a black background that just says 2004, it shows Sam as a child at a birthday party. Everyone there, apart from Sam is signing happy birthday to the person whose birthday it was. Everyone then starts clapping and there are other noises mixed in, Sam then puts his hands over his ears and scream- Meltdown. It then goes back to his home I’m guessing just after this, you can hear Elsa and Doug talking about that they knew they shouldn’t have brought Sam to the party. Doug says, “that they can’t stop every time Sam has a tantrum”. Elsa says it was more then just a tantrum. Then Doug mentions that the paediatrician said Sam is fine. This is really interesting for two things. 1) being they have looked at getting help, they just haven’t had a diagnosis. 2) A medical person has seen him and just said that someone with autism is fine. So, the parents don’t then think that their child has autism. The toing and froing ends when Doug says that 4-year olds have tantrums.  It cuts back to real time. As Elsa is looking at Sam.

Elsa Asks Sam if he is okay? Sam says that it should time to see Julia, his therapist. Sam is trying to pull the hair from the back of his head, because something is out of place if anyone was wondering. Elsa mentions that she has booked an appointment with another therapist for tomorrow. It is someone new and Elsa says he sounded really cool. Says say for the meantime he can always speak to her. Sam then leaves, and Elsa follows him until Sam runs up the stairs. It then cuts in with Sam speaking about Antarctica- this time it is about a hole the size of the State of Manie has been found in Antarctica.

It then goes back to where the last episode ended, with Doug saying that it was weird what Casey had written on the day planner. It carries on from that as Elsa wipes it off the board as she says that it is over (with the barman, Nick, not Doug).  Elsa goes to touch Doug, but he jumps back and says that he doesn’t want her to touch him. Elsa asks what she can do? Doug states that she has done enough and walks out of the kitchen and then punches a wall near him. It cuts to Sam therapy session with the new therapist.  He says that Antarctica was a fun fact. You can see Sam stimming at the bottom of the screen getting a bit faster, then says that it isn’t going to work out to the therapist. I must say even I felt a little awkward if I was him.

*Title*

We see Casey, Elsa and Sam at the dinner table. They are having dinner whilst Sam talks about the therapist he has just saw. Sam starts complaining about his eyebrows were huge. I think Casey was trying to be sarcastic when she says that it must be funny being you? Sam doesn’t take it as this as Sam replies sometimes. Elsa then chips in and says that they will to find someone else- with more reasonable eyebrows.  Then there was a funny scene between Elsa and Casey.
Elsa: Oh, Casey, good news.
Casey: Oh, Elsa, I don’t care.
Basically, Elsa mentions that Casey uniform has been sent to her and that she has put in Casey’s wardrobe for her. Sam asks when Doug is coming back, Elsa says his building a porch for grandpa- so whenever that’s done. So, she has no idea when he will be back. Elsa tris to keep making conversation and Casey keeps pushing her back. Casey then goes for a run, which leaves Sam and Elsa at the table. Sam says that he really wants to see Julia again. He knows that she hurts his feelings, but he feels better now. This is when Sam broke in to her house and made Julia suspicious about her boyfriend, Sam really can’t see the other side of things. Elsa says no and that they will find a new therapist.  It then goes to Casey going for a run, it then flashes back to Casey talking to Doug as he is about to leave they have agreed to lie to Sam, so he doesn’t get too upset or have another meltdown.  It then goes back to Casey going for her run.

It then goes to Paige video chatting Sam. Paige talks about how she likes Maine, as that is where she is at the moment. Sam then wants to talk about things that happened within the igloo. As Paige’s Grandmother just walks past the camera. Paige says she can’t talk about it for now, but Sam wants to. Sam then mentions Julia and Paige says that isn’t meant to mention her name to her. Sam mentions that as he hasn’t got anyone to speak to anymore he is feeling jumpy. Paige then mentions the igloo- so Sam starts thinking about what happened in the igloo. Paige then says they aren’t in a relationship and then she says she has to go.

We are in the Autism Support Group. Elsa is talking to one of her friends about what has happened. Says mentions that Doug isn’t answering her, and Casey hates her more then usual, well we knew the second one. The head of the group says that she so lucky her child is seeing Dr. Brob, the person who the book on working with people on the spectrum.  Elsa mentions she has tried but she isn’t taking anyone at the moment.

Casey is in her room talking to Evan about how she doesn’t want to go to a private school. It goes to Sam briefly as he is going to brush his teeth and finds his brush has been moved. He burst in to Caseys room to confront her about it. Sam get angry and then slams the doors behind him.   Evan suggest that Casey should give Sam a bit of a break. Casey says that he won’t because that is part of his routine. Elsa then walks into Casey’s room. She offers them something to eat, then mentions that the blazer Casey puts on is a little too big. Then Elsa leaves when she relies Casey doesn’t want her there.

It goes to Techtroplis where Zahid is putting a hole in a wall for some reason. Sam mentions the big hole in Antarctica. Zahid asks how the therapy search is going. Zahid says he doesn’t need one, just talk to him, his dad and his turtle. Sam explains that Doug is away and the turtle, Edison, has too much going on. Zahid finds some holes in what Doug and Casey have told him. Zahid suggest helping to put on his puffiest winter coat and let the baseball pelt him. Although he does warn Sam to wear a cup. Sam then says that he wants to speak to Julia, but Elsa won’t let him. Zahid then points out that he is his own man and he can do want he wants to do. Zahid says if he doesn’t want to go against Elsa then it can’t be that hard to find a good therapist.

It then shows a montage of some therapist Sam saw. Including a rabbit. Which we find out wasn’t areal rabbit but what Sam though the therapist resembled. Sam the questions Elsa about why Doug is building a porch in the winter? Elsa answers but Sam is too distracted as he finds that Casey has put his toothbrush in the Christmas decorations. Sam says that he wants to go back to Julia but she, Elsa, doesn’t want him to.

Elsa phones up the head of the autism support network and asks if she could talk to Dr Brob about seeing Sam. She says yes but she will need a favour from Elsa.

Casey goes to her coach to hand in her old uniform before she heads to clayton prep. The coach asks how she is feeling she says she is terrified and she miss everyone on her team.

We then see Casey getting ready for clayton prep. Casey goes to put on her blazer, but finds it missing. She Elsa if she has seen her blazer and Elsa says that its in her sewing area. Casey finds her blazer in pieces. Its starts an argument between Elsa and Casey. Casey mentions that Elsa cheated on Doug as Sam walked through the door. Sam has some questions and Casey says sorry to Sam about lying. He then gets a drink and Elsa asks if he wants to talk about it.  Sam acts totally fine about it.  Then Elsa mentions about Dr Brob and as she goes to put it on the list. Elsa finds her pen to be replace by Sam’s toothbrush. Then Sam get angry and then throws his orange juice over Casey n her brand-new clayton uniform. Casey then starts attacking Sam and Elsa has to break them apart. Sam then goes to work, and Casey runs upstairs crying.

Sam is on the bus, it stops outside where he ha his therapy with Julia, so he decides to see her. Julia reinforces that he shouldn’t be seeing her. Julia realises that Sam needs someone to speak to and tells Sam to sit in the waiting area to speak to her. Sam then blurts lots of things out. He then says thank you to Julia for being his therapist, apart from when she yelled at him and made him have a meltdown on the bus. It is so blunt and true. Also, the people who have made this have actually called it by its name- a meltdown. Julia says your welcome and says sorry for that time.
It shows Casey on her bed crying- I think. I have watched it twice and still think she was either asleep or she was just sniffing hard. Someone knocks on the door. Its Doug. Casey calms down and Doug apologies to her that he wasn’t there. Then they hug, and Casey blames her herself for everything.  Doug says it wasn’t her flaunt it was a little stupid, but it wasn’t her fault.

Then Sam walks in to the house. Elsa ask how work was, he mentions he was late because he went to see Julia. Elsa tries to talk to Sam more, but Sam sees Doug come down the stairs and he ignores Elsa. Sam fills Doug in on what he missed that was, the decoration Elsa put over the hole Doug made, that he knows Elsa cheated and that Elsa changed the spice mix.
Doug confirms that he is back to Elsa, so he wants Elsa to leave the house.

Elsa tries to make up by saying that will sleep on the couch, Doug doesn’t want her anywhere near him. Elsa says that she will leave in the morning. Doug says he wants Elsa out of the house that night.
Sam goes into Casey’s room and thanks her for getting him a new toothbrush and putting in the right spot. Sam then apologises to Casey and Casey apologises to Sam. Sam then gives Casey set of pencils he bought for her, so she can use them in her new school. He then says, “I’m your big brother, I can take care of you to”.

We then find out what the favour was, it was to look after a kitten until they get back.

Overall: I found it to be a good episode. We saw all the characters and where they were since season 1. Although it has been a few days a lot has gone on. Life at the moment seems hard for Sam everything around him has changed, the only thing that has changed is that he still has... Zahid. At the moment Zahid has only been in the episodes for the ‘cheap’ laughs. We saw, though brief, that he actually knows a bit about Sam and when Sam needs to talk. I hope we get more of Zahid not being used for these ‘cheap laughs’, he seems to be a good character, but he doesn’t get any sensible screen time. It also sounds like there is going to have a new character arriving, called Dr. Brob, they seem to know a lot about autism, but do they really? Casey at the moment has had a lot to do, it is going to be interesting how she is going to handle not looking after Sam in school anymore. Doug and Elsa storylines kinda intertwine but Elsa has no control over either sibling whilst Doug does. It was nicely set up in season 1. I don’t know where Elsa is going to stay or how she is going to look after the cat. Finally, Julia wasn’t in much of this episode, but it showed her still being understanding to Sam and that we may not see much of her now, as she is not Sam’s therapist anymore.
