Atypical Manchester
I'm going to talk about this way of speaking. I mention this
from my review of Atypical (click here to see the review). If you have read it
then you may know what I'm talking about- Person first language. I hate this way
of talking. This way of speaking means they say the person before their
diagnoses. They say things like person with autism when it’s easier and truer to
say autistic person. This form of language makes it sound like they’re is a
cure or even a manageable way to control someone’s autism. Firstly, none of this is true. You can't cure
autism. You can't manage or control it. The best you can do is just accept the
person, as a person. Instead of using this silly way of speaking, just be nice,
if people don’t understand then explain it some more. If everyone who is
autistic uses this way of speaking, one they look really stupid and sound very
simple. The community as a whole doesn’t need that. Also, if someone uses
person first speech in the everyday world, I can see it being a struggle. If
you have say a hearing impairment, you would be known as a person who is deaf;
rather then saying deaf person. This type of language and when it can be used
is difficult for autistics to navigate then add things like emotional
connections or non-verbal signals with this it just gets harder.
I hopefully have something interesting lined up shortly but
until then I have some thing a bit odd.
I had to double check this. The university of Manchester has
banned clapping, whooping and cheering in case it affects autistics. I can see
this helping, but instead of clapping, whooping and cheering they have been
told to do jazz hands. So, thinking purely logical they have changed clapping
to waving? So now we have to navigate random people waving or doing jazz hands
(but it is just a fancy wave) as well as normal human behaviours whilst at
university. One person says that they will have panic attacks or freeze up.
That kinda is your body saying it doesn’t like the environment. If you know
about this, you can do something about it. There are two routes to helping one
is therapy, mainly exposure therapy. The other is be more out going and the
body will adapt. It won’t take hours it will take time, but you can get use to
people doing odd things like clapping. As you might be aware some how... I’m on
the side of some the other person. They believe that it would be better for the
student union to raise more awareness of autism. As it will help people
understand why we have meltdowns and how they can help us. I find it funny that
neurotypicals want to decide everything for anyone who is autistic. So, this
non-clapping rule was brought in by the student union who are mainly
neurotypical. Instead of teaching every
class about autism or giving some information about autism, they ban something.
I’m curious to know as I tick if I clap or have a verbal outburst. Do I break
the rules? If so what is the punishment, because I will have to blame it on my
autism although I broke a rule in place for autistics. The more I explain it
the more it become just slightly crazy, I think? π I could get into this some more, if you do want me to then please leave a comment below. π
